Reading at Barton’s Bookshop in Leatherhead on 18 July

What a great excuse to visit this popular, buzzy, old-fashioned bookshop. I’ve heard a lot about Peter Snell, who’s a great champion of new writers, and can’t wait to stick my nose inside and meet new readers. If you’re in the area, please come and say hello.

The Stuart Vampire: Gothic drama in my favourite century

Summer reading recommendation number 1: Andrea Zuvich, aka “The Seventeenth Century Lady”, is a charming and popular C17 historian and novelist who’s cooked up a pageturning vampire story. Check it out!

Oscar Wao: Breathtakingly good writing, powerful storytelling

Summer reading recommendation number 2: Junot Diaz’ Pulitzer-winning novel. Ostensibly about a single Dominican family, he uses his remarkable technical gifts to draw you into the heartrending history of the Dominican Republic and its diaspora. Funny, geeky without being offputting, and memorable.
